Anyone who has ever been laid off knows about the emotional roller coaster that accompanies a job search. This current tight job market means it'll take more interviews and more rejections before landing that new job. That can be tough on self-esteem. What can you do to maintain your confidence?

Here are three practical ideas:

  1. Make a list of 10 things that you want to accomplish during your transition. Each item should have nothing to do with your job search, such as painting the living room, straightening the hall closet, or planning a party. The idea is to create measurable goals that when reached, will help revive your sense of confidence.

Accomplishment is a fountain of confidence. The more you accomplish, the more confident you feel. The main source of accomplishment is often a person's job, and when the job disappears, so does the accomplishment and the corresponding sense of confidence.

  2. Make a list of your strengths and review them daily. Just because you're between jobs doesn't mean your talents disappear. Create scenarios that illustrate how you've used these gifts in the past. Not only will you feel more confident, but you'll be preparing for your next interview.

There are many things you do well naturally. The problem is that it is hard to identify your own gifts. That's where the MAPP assessment can help . By taking the assessment you can pinpoint your strengths, and affirm your gifts. The MAPP website also has other confidence-building tools to help you reach your full potential.

  3. Exercise regularly. Any form of aerobic exercise will burn adrenalin and release endorphins. Sometimes a quick walk around the block is enough to chase away the blues. In a few weeks you'll look better, have more energy, and feel better about yourself.
One last thought: if these three ideas help you feel more confident during tough times, just imagine what they can do for you after you're back to work!
